End of the Line for the Landline

The landline’s days are numbered thanks to VoIP technologies and their many benefits. Though the landline had a good run, it’s time for a more effective service to take center stage. Today we’re going to go over some of the perils of the land line phone service and discuss how VoIP is changing the game.

What is a “Landline” Exactly?

The landline is known by several more technical names such as “public switch telephone networks” (PSTNs) and they use “private branch exchange” (PBX) to send through the necessary signals that create telephone communication. The signals travel through a network of copper wires and then through the network of the associated phone company.

What Makes the Landline a Thing of the Past?

The landline is tied to whatever location it is set up in and cannot move beyond this without additional infrastructure. This is to say that the number of phone lines you start with is fixed and to set more up, you will need to contact your provider to install new copper wires, which can cost you precious time and money.

International calls can also pose a challenge to businesses that still use landlines, as the rates for international service are often higher than domestic. VoIP service offers a much lower rate for these calls because you can use free on-network calling along with virtual numbers.

The other major issue with the traditional landline is that the features it offers are also limited when compared to VoIP services. For example, you can have calls from your business VoIP phone forwarded to your cell phone when out of the office. A landline system could never offer such a useful feature.

VoIP systems can also give you voice-to-email, a virtual receptionist, and plenty of flexibility for conference calls.

VoIP Reigns Supreme Over the Future of Business Phones

At the end of the day, the choices that you make about your business are the choices that will dictate the success or failure of your venture. Efficient, cost-effective decisions will help your business thrive in an increasingly competitive world. As VoIP services continue to grow, the choice will only continue to become clearer and clearer for business owners everywhere.
