Common Problems with VoIP

September 4, 2018
Category: VoIP

VoIP, or voice over internet protocol is a phone system solution for businesses that allows companies to make phone calls over the internet rather than using a traditional phone line.

VoIP is a great option for businesses because it is cost effective, portable, flexible, and it also allows for video calling. However, nothing is perfect. There are issues that can arise within your VoIP system and it’s better to know all aspects of a product before you buy.

Common Problems with VoIP

Lagging

One issue some users of VoIP may encounter is a lag or latency during their calls. This means that there is a pause between what is said and when it is received on the other end. This can slow meetings down and lead to frustrations.

Call latency is easily resolved with a higher quality router and stronger internet connection. If you are encountering latency it may be wise to take a look at your router to see if it is VoIP capable. If your internet connection is not strong enough, you may want to call your internet provider to discuss your level of service.

Jitter

Jitter is another common problem VoIP users report. In this case voices may become jumbled and jittery as they come through the connection. This problem can also be resolved by ensuring there is a strong internet connection. In addition a jitter buffer can be added to the line to help make it more clear and concise. The jitter buffer simply delays the audio slighting on the receiving end so that it can be correctly and concisely delivered.

Poor Connection

A poor internet connection is the biggest problem VoIP users encounter. For your business space this problem is easy to solve, whether it be upgrading your router or your internet service plan. In some cases you may be making a call over the internet in another location, utilizing their internet. In these cases you may need to move to another location.
